The UK Approach to Unmanned Aircraft Systems

Another document that is a few years old but still a useful read

  1. Several years since I last read that. It’s still a good piece of work.

I remember seeing a flight by the Army’s first drone system at Larkhill in 1964, ah the No 13 FA Radar and its moving drone plot against a map background. RA have been flying UAVs ever since.

What people forget is that the original reason underlying drones was the inability of the RAF to deliver Arty/R and Tac/R to meet battlefield needs, although in fairness the significant Soviet AD threat was a factor.

  2. RE the good old days when the opposition was known and could be analysed bfr the facts, I wonder how the survivability had been estimated as the AD elements were in the first 10 to 30% , depending on the depth adopted for the marching formation?
